The BMW Shorties 2019: Uncharted

Breaking records with the 14th edition of Malaysia’s most prestigious short film competition

Challenge

The BMW Shorties is one of Malaysia’s most prestigious short filmmaking platforms. Having run for 14 years, questions were asked as to whether it remained relevant or fresh. If so, what could be done to elevate its value proposition to a new generation of consumers – in line with BMW’s narrative for progressive evolution.

Solution

We analysed FINAS data to assess the gaps. What we found: While vernacular feature films were thriving, much of the content was skewed towards horror and comedy.

This led to the idea of challenging vernacular filmmakers to venture out beyond their comfort zones – inviting films of different cultures, languages, genres across all our communications.

It ultimately led to the theme for 2019: Uncharted.

Outcome

The competition was a resounding success: a record breaking 130 films were submitted. We had our first musical entry in Ralat, and the winning film PACE by Sabahan Ekin Charles was filmed in her native Kadazandusun. The Awards night, held at Rex KL to marry heritage and future – also drew in the largest, most diverse crowd ever. If anything, it just proved that the BMW Shorties was anything but passe.  Watch the Top Finalist films here.
